Original color lithographic poster, printed by American Lithographic Co., New York, USA 1918. Condition: Very Fine (A-) , backed on linen.
Sheet size: 30 H. X 20 W.
This original WWI Liberty Bond poster features the highly recognizable profile of Abraham Lincoln as seen on our cent piece and includes his most enduring quote from the Gettysburg Address. He delivered his remarks at the dedication ceremony for the National Cemetery of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, the site of one of the bloodiest and most decisive battles of the Civil War. It is for us to be "dedicated to the great task remaining before us ... that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth". And, in 1918, that same task was just as present as it was in 1863 when these words were first spoken.

The Liberty Bond program was conceived as a way to finance the US participation in WWI. It allowed individual citizens to show their patriotic spirit and support the nation and its military. Between 1917and 1918 there were four releases of Liberty Bonds. A final, fifth release occurred in April 1919 and was dubbed "Victory Bonds" to celebrate the end of World War I.
