Original photo lithographic poster, printed by Trans World Airlines (publisher), Kansas City MO, United States circa 1955. Condition: Near Mint (A) , not backed.
Sheet size: 17 H. X 22 W.
This is an original 1950's Trans World Airlines' poster from the series "Along the way of TWA" promoting travel to Egypt's capital city of Cairo. The poster features a color-foto of the Sphinx and Pyramids with locals dressed in traditional garb on camelback in the foreground.

In 1946, TWA with its fleet of Constellations, began flying to Cairo as part of the company's expansion into Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. This aggressive campaign, championed by Howard Hughes, led TWA to become the second unofficial flag carrier of the United States. According to flight schedules from 1948, New York to Cairo would take about 32 hours and included 7 stops. The itinerary itself was a magnificent tour which included Gander (9/11's Capital of Kindness), the Azores, Lisbon, Madrid, Rome, and Athens. As the plane approached Cairo, passengers were greeted with the incredible sight of the fabled pyramids viewed from the air.

The "Along the Way of TWA..." posters were printed in two sizes, this being the smaller size and was probably intended for distribution to travel and booking agents. It was also printed as a postcard distributed in flight. The design would be reformatted with added text for print ads. This use of a standardized design strategy, the incorporation of photography as the dominant image, and more targeted distribution reflects the changes in the graphic design industry as printing technologies evolved and marketing grew more towards corporate branding. The "Along the Way" series was used throughout the 1950's with minor variations.
