Ludek Marold (1865 - 1898)
Original color lithographic poster, printed by Lemercier, Paris, France circa 1895. Condition: Fine (B+) light folds with some minor repairs, backed on linen.
Sheet size: 58 H. X 42.25 W.
This original French poster created by the Czech artist Ludek Marold advertises La Meuse, the French beer from Bar-le-Duc on the Meuse River. Printed circa1895, it represents the Belle Epoque style. It is finely rendered and subtly humorous, depicting two well-dressed businessmen engaged in a lively debate all the while enjoying a cigar and a beer. Given the stack of saucers on the table, it seems like this discussion has been going on for a while; each plate represents one beer. Marold was perfect for this poster assignment confessing that as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, all he studied was good beer!

By the 1920's, Bieres de la Meuse was one of the largest breweries remaining in the area. Today you can still enjoy Biere de la Meuse as a part of the largest brewing company in Europe, Societe Europeenne de Brasserie (S.E.B.).
